How to Construct an Exclusion Fence? Essential Guide

Tips to build an exclusion fence

Design of a Fence

A fabricated mesh fence is designed to be strong, easy to instal [with the right equipment], and ideal for creating an effective barrier between feral animals, your stock, feed supply and crops. A dedicated feral animal control fence are available in 900mm, 1150mm, and 1500mm and 1800mm heights. They can with a wire knot design that creates a very strong bond between the vertical picket wires and the horizontal line wires, making it difficult for a feral animal to get through. There are a few varieties available, check with your preferred supplier to find what will suit your fencing project.

Using netting and barbed wire to make it difficult for feral pests

To deter feral pests, fabricated netting with barbed wire is very effective. There are a number of options available to consider;

  • One options is the use of Barbed Hinged Apron to handle pressure of animals trying to push under the back of the fence.
  • A second option is, install a 2.0mm barbed wire approximately 50mm above ground level as your sight wire.

Feral dogs, pigs, and Kangaroos will be deterred from digging or pushing their way under the fence by the sharp barbs. If animals try to test the fence, another barbed wire at the top will act as a deterrent. An apron at the bottom of netting will deter burrowing animals. Remember, if unsure what suits your project check with your preferred supplier to find what will work best for your fencing project.

Undersized or inappropriate corner posts

Corners are high-pressure areas, so fortifying them can help keep feral animals from finding a weak spot and breaking through. Kangaroos, in particular can wreak havoc on your corners. By spacing your fence posts closer together and using larger, stronger fence posts, you can save money in the long run.

This is the most common mistake in fencing, whether it is barbed, high-tensile wire, or woven wire. The most common problems are undersized posts and corner posts that are not set deeply enough, especially in sandy or soft soils. The depth in the ground should be equal to, or greater than, the height of the top wire.

Tension on the wire

Make sure that your wire is tensioned to the supplier’s specifications. This is a key factor for the longevity of the fence and has a direct impact on its effectiveness. Wire that is not properly tensioned will simply not work against feral animals to protect your livestock and crops, producing a heart-breaking result. There are several tools that can help with this task, for many the most effective way to tension fabricated fence netting is with FastFencer.
